Masterclass Vertical Tasting: Mariental – Winery ET (Ernst Triebaumer)
A vertical tasting of Blaufränkisch Mariental from Ernst Triebaumer Winery offers a deep dive into the evolution of this iconic wine, which first gained attention in 1985/86. Mariental, crafted from a single vineyard in Rust, Burgenland, has become one of Austria’s benchmark Blaufränkisch wines. Known for its exceptional depth, balance, and expression of terroir, each vintage captures the essence of the region’s unique soils and microclimate.
The vertical tasting will allow participants to explore multiple vintages, experiencing how time affects the wine's complex structure and flavour profile. Young vintages, such as the 2021 Blaufränkisch Mariental, offer vibrant notes of sour cherry, blackberry, and herbal nuances like juniper and bitter chocolate. As the wine ages, its tannins integrate, and more nuanced characteristics emerge, including earthy tones, black fruits, and sometimes more evolved notes like leather and tobacco.
Earlier vintages, reaching back to the first years of production, reveal the wine’s remarkable ageing potential, showcasing how its structure and natural acidity allow it to maintain freshness while developing profound layers of complexity over decades. This tasting will not only highlight the winemaking mastery of the Triebaumer family over the generations but also demonstrate how Mariental balances fruit, minerality and earthy notes, making it a quintessential expression of Blaufränkisch from Rust.
The tasting is an excellent opportunity to appreciate the winery’s dedication to sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention in both the vineyard and the cellar, allowing the true character of each vintage to shine through.
