Riesling Vertikal Tasting Clemens Strobl Rosen & Wechsler Morstein 2017-2022

Friday, 13. December 2024

Hardly any grape variety conveys the terroir as impressively as Riesling. A vertical comparison of two top Rieslings from two different regions with different terroirs is therefore particularly exciting.

CLEMENS STROBL RIESLING ROSEN, WAGRAM
The aromatic grapes of this Riesling exotic grow on red, ferrous gravel at the very top of the Rosenberg, right on the edge of the forest. In the Burgundian bottle, it shows its commitment to the region. It smells of tropical fruit and is characterised by a unique balance. A wine with tension and vibrancy.

WEINGUT WECHSLER RIESLING MORSTEIN, RHEINHESSEN
The wine from this famous vineyard comes from a cool and relatively high-altitude parcel, which is predominantly clay and limestone marl with a slope of 20-25 per cent. In 2012, the south-facing vineyard was replanted with Riesling clones from the Mosel. The vines here have to literally dig into the stony limestone rock, which is difficult to penetrate, in order to reach the water-bearing and nutrient-rich limestone rock layers. The Morstein gives rise to dark Rieslings with power and great length.

We taste the six vintages 2017 to 2022 of the two wines side by side in flights of two, giving us the opportunity to compare and observe not only the different terroirs, but also the different vintages and the development of the wines over time.

Katharina and Manuel Wechsler as well as Clemens and Lukas Strobl will moderate the tasting and provide valuable first-hand background information.
