with Roland Velich, Moric Winery
and Sascha Speicher, editor-in-chief of Meininger's Sommelier
Despite its undisputed class, Austria's great red wine variety is still not recognised enough internationally in the concert of great soloists alongside Nebbiolo, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese and Syrah. A unique experiment shows how precisely the profile of Blaufränkisch has been honed in the meantime: every participating sommelier, hotelier or restaurateur is asked to bring along an excellent international wine of their choice that shows certain similarities or parallels to Blaufränkisch in terms of fruit, flavour, tannin structure or acidity (vintages 2018 to 2022). These top international wines are contrasted with 12 style-defining Blaufränkisch wines in the blind tasting, compiled by Sascha Speicher, editor-in-chief of Meininger's Sommelier, and Roland Velich from the Moric winery.
